Graduate student workers are entitled to 12 vacation days over the course of a twelve-month appointment. Graduate student workers with partial appointments (e.g., no enrollment over the summer) may have their vacation days reduced proportionally. Vacation days do not accrue or carry over between appointment periods. Vacation scheduling must be requested and approved in advance by each student’s supervisor.
In addition, graduate student workers are entitled to additional time off for:
- Visa proceedings (up to 5 days per year)
- Sick leaves (see here: https://gradschool.cornell.edu/policies/paid-sick-leave-for-assistantships)
- University closures (if work cannot be performed remotely)
- Bereavement leave (up to 3 days per year)
- Jury duty
In addition, the University identifies holidays when the university is officially closed. During a designated university holiday, Graduate Student Workers may be required to conduct work (such as laboratory work or grading of assignments) when determined to be necessary by their supervisor or when necessitated by University-set deadlines. Individual supervisors shall not unreasonably require substantial other work to be performed on University scheduled holidays.
